Puritans believe in strict rules and only the chosen ones can go to heaven as it's going to get overpopulated over the course of our history. They believe humans are born sinful and are damned for eternality, seeing that Adam and Eve screwed up in the Garden of Eden. On contrast, rationalist believe that God created the universe by a set of rules. Figuring out the rules that were made by God is a demonstration of piety. In my opinion, the puritans are foolhardy. If it is already chosen, it really doesn't matter if you work hard for your whole life. They would probably go crazy if they weren't chosen in the end. Our modern society is going with the rationalist theology without much faith going around.
